Which direction do you think wave boards are heading, do you think quads were a fad or are they here to stay?
I’m certainly loving mine. We developed our new range of Wave cults to be a bit more convertible. You can take the front fins out and ride it as a twin for a more skatey style, or keep the front fins for more grip. Like this they offer the perfect solution to any conditions. In the end though, I think all the set ups work well and it’s about getting used to it. Look at the top 3 guys on the PWA. Philip uses twins, Victor uses quads and Alex a thruster set-up. That just shows you that they all work well I think. (Interview conducted before final 2013 results determined. Ed.)
It seems like you have laid down your harness in Gran Canaria for the time being, do you think you will end up living there for the rest of your life?
I have to say I really like it there. We have great conditions all year around for either windsurfing or surfing. We get so much wind there, that if you have all the gear, you can sail everyday I reckon.
We have wave spots and flat water too, so for testing it’s ideal. I can test freestyle, slalom, freeride and wave all within 30 minutes of my front door. I do miss the U.K. for sure, but pretty much every time we travel anywhere we pass through, so I get to say hello to my chums and, if I’m lucky, get some sailing in too.
At the end of the day though, there’s no way Nayra could ever live in the U.K., so if I want to be with my wife and daughter, it’s most likely going to be GC!
