BOARDWISE DEC 23 - TOP

LATE CALL | PE’AHI

KEVIN PRITCHARD

The night before I went out super late and was not planning on going to Jaws at all. I received the call 10 minutes before going and Brawzinho was like, I have space for you, we are leaving in 10 minutes, so I packed my stuff went down and jumped on his ski. It was literally the easiest Jaws mission ever!

I used an old quad board, something I knew would work great, simple and easy! A super fast board to catch the waves and kind of heavy from being repaired so much. I was on my Ezzy Taka 5.0 and it was perfect for that session! Brawzinho was in charge of safety, he hired Maxi to be on the ski. The last time he went up there, he crashed, luckily for him Jason Polakow and I were sitting in the channel, not rigged up, and went and grabbed him, so he learned from that to always take some sort of safety cover. I think people were thinking it wasn’t going to be big enough and they were kind of right. It was pretty small but luckily it wasn’t crowded because that would have made it really hard to catch a wave! Even so, because it was quiet, I had quite a bit of fun, it was a mellow ‘not going to die’ sort of day. It felt nice to be out there when you weren’t going to be so extreme on every wave.

I am always scared up at Jaws. I don’t really like it too much and I really need to train more for it. If I was to get held down for a while I would be pretty scared and I’m not sure if I am fit enough to last too long underwater. I guess it is all a mindset right! It was pretty late in the year that is for sure for a session at Jaws. I would say that was the latest I have sailed it! For me it was more about the adventure than the great sailing, it was hanging out with Ross and Brawzinho and heading up there. That was the exciting part. And the fact you know you are going to be riding some huge waves when you get there! It was the sort of day that makes you grateful to live on Maui!
