BOARDWISE DEC 23 - TOP

NIK BAKER | BACK ON THE ROCK

The next day we went up again. I changed my flight again. I did not sleep all night after the exhilaration of the first Jaws session. This time it was a normal Jaws day and only double mast high. This time we were sailing it from back door and bottom turning around the lip. It felt like a big day at Ho’okipa compared to the day before which was off-the-hook. I knew and, I still say to this day, that had I fallen off on one of those waves I would have died! There was no chance of surviving that! Nothing has ever come close to that first day and hopefully I will never have to do something like that again.

MAUI WOWIE!
So after twenty years of flying half way round the world to Maui, does the island still have that magical allure like it did in the old days or has that old buzz faded away making a trip to Hawaii just another tick on the list…

NB: I still love it here. It will always hold a special place in my heart. On this trip fortunately enough I have been able to stay with Jason Polakow who was my best mate over in Maui for years and years. He was like my brother really and we lived together for over ten years. We travelled together and to come back here and spend some time with him and my other friends that I don’t see very often has been really cool. We all have busy lives these days so we have had to move on from the old days. We all have families and stuff. It has been really nice to come back and just have a ‘moment’ back into a little bit of my old life.
