HAVING-IT IN HAVERFORDWEST

RISKY BUSINESS
The next day we joined Jim’s convoy as it worked its way up into Cardiganshire round to the North of Newgale. Looking down from the road, we could see clean lines of swell wrapping round every point we passed making for images that would not have been out-of-place in Peru, let alone Wales. Finally we turned down a muddy track and out onto a pebble beach for our first view of this mythical point break. Two problems.

First, the swell was not quite big enough for the waves to be peeling all the way into the bay and second, there was barely a breath of wind. Sniffing the air the locals were reckoning the wind still had a twitch of east in it but was forecast to switch by midday so not to worry. Out in front the surf was sheet glass and going-off, so while we were waiting for the wind there was still quality water time to be had. Unfortunately for Jamie, he didn’t have a surf board and by this time his girlfriend had informed him that his portion of their romantic meal for two had been dispatched into the bin! He was truly in the dog house!
