JENS HOGENKAMP GALLERY

Check out this awesome gallery of pictures from German photographer, Jens Hogenkamp who was working with Simon Thule in Cape Town last winter, from dawn right through until dusk to capture the very best light and atmosphere!

“As the selection of photos shows, I was shooting a lot with Simon Thule (D134 Sailloft, Starboard, Brunotti) in Cape Town last winter. In addition to water shootings and the usual sunset shootings, we motivated ourselves to realise sunrise shootings a few times. Looking back, these are the most intense memories. As a windsurf photographer you’re working with many talented sailors. Everyone is performing great, of course, but there are different characters.

There are those who just do their thing, regardless of the photographer on the beach, ride the wave all the 200m downwind, and then cruise back for a very long time, so you can’t get many pictures.

And there are the characters who use every run efficiently in order to present themselves in front of the camera as often as possible and then don’t hesitate- in doubt also going to the lip too late to ensure that the photo result is stunning. Simon is definitely category number 2, 100% commitment, a dream to work with. And this professionalism and motivation makes it a pleasure to work with him.

There are also riders for whom dinner and a few drinks are more important in the evening and could never motivate themselves for a sunrise shooting. And there are drivers like Simon, who got up several mornings early before sunrise and then shredding, for example jumping goiters at first light. If the wind before sunrise would be 100% predictable and reliable, a sunrise shooting would be almost too easy, haha… Anyhow, getting up early few times created unforgettable memories and unique photos. Thank you Simon!”

“For me, the morning sessions are always the most exciting sessions. You are driving in the dark, entering the spot in the dark, and the only thing you see is a bit of white water and the sound of the blowing wind and swell hitting the shore. It doesn’t matter how early you going to bed you are always a bit tired when you wake up at 5 am, but as soon you are in the water you feel hyped and ready to hit the late sections, especially when you know the photographer will get everything!

And Jens – always focussed- is getting everything! Always on time or a bit earlier, which makes it so much easier to focus just on one thing: Windsurfing! Was a pleasure to share the sunrises! ”
