SEVERNE FOX V3 115L TEST REVIEW 2024

The Verdict

An absolute rocket. The Fox eats up chop for breakfast, relishing a committed riding style, it will give you way more back than you put in, while still always remaining stable, comfortable and fast. The Fox is a real standout in the category.

The Lowdown

Visually, the Fox is an attractive board with a deep lusty red filling the boards outline combined with jet black straps and deck pads; the Fox means business. Assembling the Fox is made simple with Severne’s HEX4 key provided to insert the fin and straps. Glancing over the footstraps and the simplicity of options available, the Fox features ramps integrated into the deck pad where the toes will sit in the front strap, while at the rear, a raised mound is built into the hull of the board, which sits between the rear straps for your toes to sit on, helping to keep the rider committed, planted, and comfortable. The Fox has a gently progressing volume distribution from nose to tail, while its parallel outline increases stability, while reducing drag. Looking through the archives of the Fox, its parallel outline has been drawn in slightly in the tail this year, which helps with earlier planing and easier gybing. Rolling the board over and looking over the hull shape of the Fox, a healthy amount of vee sits under the nose ready to eat through any chop presented before it. This blends subtly into a vee double concave – promoting both lift and speed. Meanwhile, in the tail section there is more vee to provide control, while elevating the Fox’s gybing performance. The Fox screams performance, while still offering plenty of comfort.

Brand Claim

“Don’t let the comfort deceive you – in real-world conditions, the Fox delivers unmatched high performance fun.”

Performance

Walking down to the water’s edge, with board and sail in hand, the Fox oozes pedigree. Upon immediately stepping on the board, the Fox feels comfortable underfoot, with its length happily carrying the rider’s weight when off the plane – while waiting for that opportune gust. The Fox is responsive to direct input from the rider and will urge you on to the plane. The footstraps are easy to find and you instantly notice the ramps under both feet – which really allow you to plant your toes to drive the board, while offering outstanding comfort. Don’t let its comfort fool you though, as the Fox accelerates in the blink of an eye, while possessing an impressive top speed. The Fox wants you to sail it with full commitment, sheeted in, and if you do so, you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful locked in sensation. Due to the level of comfort the Fox provides, it instils confidence in the rider, encouraging you to drive it harder and faster. The more you push, the more you will be rewarded. Faced with challenging seas, the Fox performed the best on test. Its ability to handle everything from butter flatwater, to rolling swell, and nasty chop was profound with the nose resisting capture from unruly chop. Meanwhile, the Fox’s length and parallel outline work to your advantage again – allowing you to find some impressive upwind angles, before you prepare for another hell-for-leather downwinder. Through the gybes, the Fox remains fast, but perfectly measured, thanks to its slightly wider tail outline than previous years, giving you added control to execute or adapt the radius of your turn. The Fox is a real performance freeride board that will leave your beach buddies in your wake and asking for a “quick spin”.
